What is a domain name? How is it different from a URL?

People talk about domain names, URLs and websites like everyone know what they are, but it turns out, that not everyone does. So here is a very simple explanation of some of the terms you might encounter.

Put simply a domain is the name of a website. – For example, thisismywebsite.com

A URL is how to find a website on the internet and this includes the bit at the front, for example –  https://thisismywebsite.com or https://www.thisismywebsite.com

A website is what people see and interact with when they get there. – This is the page or collection of pages that contain the information that you want the world to see. The website needs to be stored on a server which can be accessed by the internet, this is called the host.

In other words, when you buy a domain, you have purchased the name for your site, but you still need to build the site and give it a home to live in.
